The impulse to draw and paint pictures is mysterious to me. I don’t understand why I love doing this. As far back as I can remember I’ve made marks on white surfaces.

At the start I worked on learning to portray reality verbatim. The discipline I developed in so doing led me to visually dissect the world around me in order to figure out how it is put together. I still delight in this process. The act of painting ghanges forever how I view my subject.

Having learned to take the world apart, I realized that I could put it back together however I wanted. The seductive power of surrealism is that it makes the artist a world builder. Rocks can float, flowers arrive from outer space and lizards grow to the size of whales.

Some of my favorite things are disappearing: Blue skies, desert tortoises, tigers, rain forests. They are being devoured by a frightening but ridiculous machine. My job is to use my skills as an artist to draw attention to the losses and to rage against the machine. I enjoy my work.
